Instructions
Preparation
Start by cutting the tops off the onions and peeling them. Place them cut-side down and make deep cuts into the onion, creating a flower shape. Be careful not to cut all the way through.
In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and hot sauce if using.
Dip each onion into the flour mixture first, then into the buttermilk mixture, and back into the flour mixture to coat well.
Cooking
Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
Carefully place each onion in the hot oil. Fry for about 5-7 minutes until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Preparing the Dip
For the Creamy Buttermilk Ranch Dip, mix together the buttermilk, mayonnaise, chives, dill, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
Serving
Serve the crunchy mini bloomin' onions hot with the ranch dip.
Notes
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to regain crispiness.
